Coronation Street
Weatherfield celebrates 50 years of high drama this December. Over these five wonderful decades, soap fans have been enthralled with the biggest storylines from murders, affairs, family scandals and no one has yet popped their clogs from indulging in one too many of Betty’s hotpots. What’s not to love about Corrie?
EastEnders
EastEnders has never shied away from shocking fans to their very core, and this year the live episode witnessed the final hours of Bradley Branning. A soap that takes monumental risks and stars Barbara Windsor in the role of feisty Peggy Mitchell, who knows what daring storyline writers have rolled up their sleeves for us yet.
Emmerdale
Emmerdale is no sleepy little village - quite the opposite, in fact. Its residents have witnessed a magnitude of horrors from murder, rape, affairs, and, well, every darn horrible thing imaginable. Still the folk in Emmerdale remain quite cheery all the same, in spite of the village being almost wiped out by that infamous plane crash.
Fair City
(RTÉ)
Can Fair City hold the title of Favourite Soap two years running? With juicy storylines like Yvonne Doyle’s baby drama, Paul and Niamh’s marriage breakdown, and Kylie, Tracey and Dean’s love triangle it’s certainly possible that the gang from Carrigstown will reign supreme yet again. The decision is yours, so cast your vote.
Hollyoaks
Set in the fictional suburb of Hollyoaks, you might be surprised to learn that this sexy soap has been running on TV screens for 15 years. It has a substantial young fanbase, although storylines and families like the Cunninghams and the McQueens make Hollyoaks a family drama at its heart, and its viewership appeal knows no bounds.
Ros na Rún
(TG4)
Much like Emmerdale, almost anything is likely to happen in this tiny village, in the West of Ireland. From kidnapping, extortion, violence and downright gruesome murders, this is one soap that is never short on drama. Ros Na Rún is our Irish language soap, and truly deserves a big win on the night. Who wins of course is up to you.
