Jenna Louise Coleman
(Jasmine Thomas - Emmerdale)

Jasmine had a turbulent year. When her drugs investigation led to her own doorstep – namely her boyfriend Shane, he nearly killed her until she whacked him to death and hid the body. Best friend and sometime lover Debbie took the rap and Jasmine left. Will we ever see her again?

Hilda Fay
(Tracey McGuigan- Fair City)

Tracey is the type of person who defines herself by the bad experiences she’s had, and there have been plenty! Recently she’s found happiness in her relationship with Dominic but even that’s been on the rocks, with a disastrous move to London...

Jo Joyner
(Tanya Branning - EastEnders)

Tanya is a classic EastEnder, strong and proud but also vulnerable and dedicated to her kids. She even took a stretch in prison to protect Lauren after she tried to kill Max. On top of all that, her friendship with Jane provided plenty of laughs amid the doom and gloom of the Walford winter.

Katherine Kelly
(Becky - Coronation Street)

This year Becky has gone from nuisance chav of Weatherfield, to one of Corrie’s best-loved characters. Her relationship with Steve as well as her scenes with Roy and Hayley in the Café have provided some genuine laughs, but Katherine is equally adept at more dramatic stories.

Jennifer Metcalf
(Mercedes McQueen - Hollyoaks)

Mercedes is a consistently popular character, she speaks her mind and knows that her sex appeal can get her what she wants! Her involvement in the kidnapping plot as well as her will-they-won’t-they relationship (and eventual marriage) with Malachy capped off a huge 2008 for her.

Máire Éilís Ní Fhlatharta
(Caitriona Ni Loidean - Ros na Rún)

Local reporter Catríona doesn’t take any prisoners in pursuit of a story, and her messy divorce from Vince this year has provided scenes both comedic and dramatic. She recently called a truce in the hope of helping him beat his alcohol addiction, but will this lead to reconciliation?

Ciara O’Callaghan
(Yvonne Doyle - Fair City)

Mega-bitch Yvonne made her return to Fair City this year, and immediately started rubbing everyone up the wrong way. No one was safe, especially not Geraldine, who had to start defending the Bistro from takeover. Yvonne eventually won out, but now has to defend the place from Louie taking over completely!

Rita Simons
(Roxy Mitchell - EastEnders)

Since arriving on the Square, blonde bombshell Roxy has become one of Walford’s most treasured residents. From her antics down at R&R to her tempestuous relationship with sister Ronnie and her dramatic pregnancy storyline, 2008 was a busy year for Roxy.

Samia Smith
(Maria - Coronation Street)

This year Maria has been at the heart of one of Corrie’s most dramatic murder storylines ever. Following the death of her husband Liam, Maria was driven to the brink of madness through her relentless pursuit of the truth, that he was murdered. Maria went to the edge, and took Corrie viewers with her.

Charley Webb
(Debbie Dingle - Emmerdale)

Debbie has long been involved with some of Emmerdale’s most controversial storylines, and this year’s been no different. Not only was she caught up in Jasmine’s murder of Shane, she actually took the blame for it in the ultimate act of friendship, allowing Jasmine to escape.
